Surroundings
Besides its natural beauty of the town itself, there are some exceptional natural, historical and cultural sights, little picturesque towns which are in close proximity worth mentioning. Here you can find the list of numerous places you can visit which we strongly recommend. For further information check the links on the left – hand side.
NATIONAL PARKS: Near Vodice there are two beautiful national parks with extraordinary natural beauty:
National park Kornati (30 kilometers from coast):
This is the one of the most interesting archipelagos on the Mediterranean, a unique combination of 150 islands, islets and cliffs in the middle of the Adriatic. Surrounded with the crystal clear waters, abundance of sun, numerous bays and small ports, Kornati is one of the best destinations for those who love extraordinary nature.
National park Krka (30 kilometers from Vodice):
The Krka river springs near Knin, is known for the 75 kilometers long stone canyon, and it flows into the bay of Šibenik. Don’t miss Roški slap, Skradinski buk (the ?? in Europe, the height of it is 46 meters.) Prokljansko jezero, the Visovac monastery and many others.
National park Plitvička jezera (100 kilometers away): The most famous national park in Croatia. It consists of 16 lakes separated by travertine barriers which is considered one of the most beautiful national parks in Europe. Due to its great variety of natural landscape it is on the UNESCO list of national heritage since 1979!
National park Paklenica (70 kilometers away): This is a unique combination where the mountains meet the sea, with the rich forest, and steep canyons in the mountain of Velebit, and a unique rocky landscape with many caves and pits.
SOME OTHER INTERESTING LOCATIONS:
Okit hill: Near Vodice, on the hill of Okit, in the time of the Turkish invasion, the refugees have founded a community, and soon after the chapel of Lady of Mercy was built, in 1660. This place has a great view of the whole bay and nearby islands.
Tribunj: A beautiful fishing village with its center on the picturesque peninsula. On a surrounding hill there is st. Nicholas church, built in 1452, it’s worth visiting and also checking out the beautiful view of Kornati islands.
Skradin: A small, picturesque cute little town just before the entrance to the national park of Krka. Explore the old town center, and then head to Skradinski buk and Visovac monastery.
Šibenik: The ancient Croatian town from the 11th century, situated almost exactly in the middle of the Adriatic, where the Krka river flows in.
Today, Šibenik is the political, cultural, and economic center of the Šibensko – kninska županija (territorial-administrative region).
Prvić island: Šepurine and Prvić Luka are the only villages on the island, known for its narrow streets and old stone houses that have not changed for centuries. The island is mentioned for the first time in the 11th century, and is populated in the time of the Turkish invasion. In the 16th century aristocracy from Šibenik turned it into their favorite destination with beautiful villas (well known Vrančić Family).
Archaeological sites: The development of Vodice is associated with the construction of sv. Križ church (next to the hotel Punta) which dates back centuries, although the first settlements have developed in the prehistoric times. Visit some of these archaeological sites and discover the wealth of cultural and historical heritage of this region: Šabin hill, Velika Mrdakovica – Arauzona, Dragišić, Rakitnica and Prižba.
